DPM 2012 VTL to Physical Tape Automation
database integrity chechk failed after restore
Good mourning, colleagues.
Here's the problem: I have a protection group containing SQL databases, and tape backup, scheduled to performed once a week.
While recovering some bases from tape we found out that restored bases turned out to fail the intergrity check, and all that backups are created during the same month. all the other recovery points on disk and tape pass all the tests successfully.
No DPM events, related to these recovery pints on tape were found - so DPM consideres these backups to be valid.
So - is there any way to check the backed up SQL databases for integrity, or some other way to avoid such a fail with it?
DPM2010 - StorageTek SL500 - Job Looping, Inventory Failed, required drive resource not online, Library not functioning efficiently,
Hundreds of Errors, Thousands of spawned inventory jobs are created when trying to inventory library.
Using an SL500 library with 2 tape drives with DPM 2010.
A really weird issue, but it may be related to how DPM sees the library. or DPM doesnt know how to work with 2 tape drives. I can see that it tries to inventory a tape, so it tries to grab one tape and stick it into 2 tape drives. one will grab it and the other job will fail saying the tape is missing from the slot and the library state is not up to date.
I am able to run a drive cleaning of each of the drives in the library.
The drives show up in device manager and look normal. DPM does not detect these drives automatically. It detects the library and shows all the tapes. I manually ran the dpmdrivemapping.exe to create the DPMLA.xml file, did a rescan and the tape drives showed up. So far so good.
Some tapes are "Unknown", initiated identify, and it spawned an 6 inventory job, after 10 seconds, it spawns 12 more jobs, and then spawn 30 more jobs, and then spawn 60 jobs, and then spawn 100 jobs. etc etc. It looks like when one inventory job fails, it retries all the inventory jobs. To stop the cycle, I have to disable the drives and manually delete the inventory jobs in the queue. Enabling the drive will start the cycle again, until the error sticks in the critical alerts tab instead of auto retrying.
The library status shows (Inventory in Progress...)
Hundreds of event log alerts:
The detailed inventory of tape failed for the following reason: (ID: 3316)
DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID: 24052)
goes with the hundreds of Failed jobs:
DPM is not synchronized with the current state of your library. Jobs running on the Tape Library Sun/StorageTek Library can potentially fail. (ID 25009 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990C19)
and several Thousands of Warnings:
Detailed Inventory is not performed on the tape (D00540) as it is already known to this DPM server. (ID 24033)
DPM 2012 R2 Tape Barcode Length
Does anyone know DPM 2012 R2 restrictions for tape labels. Right now we are using 6 characters, would it be hard to change to 8?

UNREADABLE BARCODE TAPE IN DRIVE DPM 2012
Hi,
I have a problem with an unreadable barcode in one of my drive. It's a Tl400.
Console Administration show drive empty in manage library and System Status shows an error in drive. DPM show drive in use for several days.
I tried to identify, remove and clean the unreadable tape, also inventory both, the library and the dpm server but nothing works.
Fron the panel of the library I went to the option Manage-Move-Drive-to I/o Station but unit is busy al the time.
Other Library Services show : Incomp. Medium

DPM2012 R2 and Virtual Tape Library ( VTL ) - How to allocate disk volume?
Hello,
We plan to upgrade our backup solution running DPM2010 to DPM2012 R2 with a new storage pool
While we had until now a direct attached storage (SAS connection) to the DPM server, our vendor proposes a storage model with VTL (Virtual Tape Library) interface.
If I do understand, VTL acts like a Virtual Tape Library and thereforce appears like a "physical tape Library" under DPM Library management, right? Instead of having physical tape, you manage virtual tape.
In that case, once you attache your storage to your DPM server, it only appears as a tape libray, and you can't allocate it for a disk pool allocation?
In that case, if you plan to have short-term protection with Disk2Disk backup, it's not possible Under DPM, is it?
Does anyone have a experience return of using SAN storage with VTL interface?

Evan
How to find which tapes were written last weekend?
Hello everyone,
Running DPM 2012 R2 here with a 48 slot HP tape library. A PG backs up our Production VMs at 8 PM from Monday to Friday. Then on Saturday morning the tapes backups are done.
We want to rotate tapes off site bi-weekly. Hence we want to take out tapes bi-weekly.
How can we find out which tapes were written to last weekend?
Sure, I could comb through the tape jobs which ran last Sunday and check what tapes they used, but that is too tedious!
PS: The PGs are set to use co-location. Co-location is set to
- Write period of two weeks and,
- Expiry tolerance of 7 days.

Setting up Shared Library Fails to execute.
I have 3 DPM servers and one Dell ML6000 Tape Library. Attempting to set up a shared library between them with DPM-2 as the Library server. I have set up the SQL Server and Server Agent with a domain account. I have enabled Named Pipes, and verified that Medium Changer devices is not enabled on the client DPM. The problem is that the client will not execute the Client SQL Server or the Client DPM Server configuration after seemingly successfully configuring the Global SQL config.
On the client:
AddLibraryServerForDpm.exe -DPMServerWithLibrary dpm-2.hcpss.org
Configuration successful.
On the server:
AddLibraryServerForDpm.exe -ShareLibraryWithDpm dpm-3.hcpss.orgConfiguration successful.
On the client:
Enter administrator credential for Global SQL Server (DPM-2)
Domain:hcpss
Username:dpmlibsa
Password:*******
(DPM-2) : Global SQL Server configuration Successful.
Failed to execute SharedLibraryConfigureDb.sql on DPM-3\MSDPM2012
I have attempted to remove the Library sharing from both the server and client, and add it back, with the same results.
DPM 2012 R2 crashes during tape backup for a specific server
Hi Community,
A customer of ours is experiencing an issue with DPM crashing after a period of time when backing up a large protection group to tape.
Customer is running DPM 2012 R2 URE 5
Upon looking in the DPM Logs, we see the following error, immediately prior to the system crashing.

The server is part of a protection group that is co-located, I am trying the backup not as part of a co-located set to see if this makes any difference.
Tape backups for other servers, which are part of the same co-location group, work fine and it seems to be just this one causing the issue.
I have seen a few other posts on the net referencing "WARNING MediaPool 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 does not exist." where people have similar issue with DPM crashing out but so far nobody seems to have any answers.
I am debating removing the protection group and trying to 'start from scratch' but wondered if anyone else had any thoughts ?
Thanks in advance,
Ed
Erase Tapes
Hello. I want to use with DPM 2012 R2 a tape created by Windows 2003 Server backup utility and i am getting the following message:
"The tape in Stand Alone Drive Tape Library Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-6 drive at Drive Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-6 drive has been written to by another tape backup application using an unsupported physical block size. DPM supports a physical block of 65536 bytes for writing and a physical block size ranging from 1024 bytes to 65536 bytes for reading. So DPM will not be able to read or overwrite the contents of this tape. (ID 24084 Details: When accessing a new tape of a multivolume partition, the current block size is incorrect (0x80070452))"
I read about a utility name mytape.exe that can erase the tape, but i can't find it somewhere.
Can someone help?
Thanks in advance for you replies
Calculate Data size to be written to tape.
Hi Folks
I have 11 Protection groups configured to 30 days disk backups and then on 1st of every month that data to be written to tape.
Means
Short Term retention (Disk) : 30 Days
Long Term retention (Tape) : 5 Years (To be written on 1st of every month)
Now I have 3 TB each tape in tape library, on tape job time - express full backups size is varying between 2.5 TB to 3.5 TB.
Through tape optimization I have configured all tape backups to single tape, so when data size is 2.5 TB that is writing properly.
But when data size is more than 3 TB on tape job time, it make tape offsite ready after filling it and the jobs having restof 500 Gigs data are failing. Is there any way so I can calculate data size before 1st of month so I can decide either to send it to single tape or two !
Dual DPM server single Tape Library
We currently have a single DPM server (2012R2 RU5) with 76TB of disk space connected to a tape library. As we are getting close to the 80TB limit we want to deploy another DPM server and have questions around it.
1) Can we move the local DPM DB to a shared SQL server and when we deploy the 2nd DPM server it will use the same DB?
2) Can we share our tape library between the two DPM servers? We have a Dell TL4000 fiber channel dual drive system.
- we perform disk backups on the weekend and we want to setup where both DPM servers have access to and can write to tape. Possibly each DPM servers controls a single a single drive but the DPM database needs to be aware of which DPM server the backup occurs from or can restore to.
Other issues I'm not thinking of?
Thanks

Using DPM to backup Windows 2012 Dedupe volume to a tape library
Hi All,
I am very new to DPM and have configured a DPM 2012 server on a physical server with an IBM Tape Library. The goal is to backup long term copy of a dedupe windows volume to the tape library. However, I have noticed that DPM is not optimizing the backup but instead copying the entire raw volume. I was hoping to get some clarification from someone for the below :
Does DPM support dedupe on tape library ?
Does DPM support dedupe on disks if it's configured on a dedicated physical machine with high volume storage attached to it?
I would appreciate your response on this.
Kind Regards,
Jony

Hi,
I am experiencing the following error in Data Protection Manager and can't get it fixed or resolved:
"DPM encountered a critical error while performing an I/O operation on the tape File Server-00000004 (Barcode - ) in Drive IBM ULT3580-HH4 SCSI Sequential Device. (ID 30101 Details: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error (0x8007045D))". Also at times only 0.13MB is written to the tape when the error occurs. My setup: O/S: Windows 2012 R2 as a VM on VMware esxi 5.5 Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 Tape drive: IBM ULT3580-HH4 SCSI Sequential Device Firmware: A233 (As a standalone drive) When I do diagnostics with ITDT (IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool) from the server, everything runs ok in the tool. No errors. Which then suggests that the problem is with DPM. I have searched the net and tried many different things, i.e. registry editing, reinstalling driver. No luck. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |
DPM 2012 Backup 50 To to tape
Hello,
I will need to back up a server (cluster) which has approximately 50To of data.
To do this, we have 2 Lto4 and 1 Lto5 libraries. That means it will use nearly 40 tapes.
As far I understand DPM (2012) will back up all this data on one set of tapes because there is only one PG for this server and there is no other manner to do it.
So the problem is that in case of recovery, it will require to reinsert the same set of tapes (40) even if there is only one single file to restore.
So I would like to know if what I say is correct and if there is a way to configure this backup differently to not have to do this in case of recovery.
Thanks in advance for your help.
How To Manage Tapes for Weekly and Monthly LT Backups and a Single Drive
Hello
I need some advice on how to manage media reporting when there are certain tapes which I don't want to ever show as expired (ready for reuse) in DPM. Specifically, is there a way to modify the expiration time of a tape after it has been written by DPM?
Some Background:
We have a newly installed DPM 2010 system that we are testing as a replacement to our Backup Exec system. We are using disk for short-term protection and one partition of a Dell TL2000 for long-term backups to tape. Our LT backup objectives are to keep 4 weekly backups offsite along with monthly offsite backups (kept for 7 years).
Since we have only a single tape drive in the library partition I don't have the option of having DPM make monthly copies of the weekly tapes via multiple LT objectives. Our intended workaround is to allow DPM to make the weekly tapes and then just rotate out the last weekly tape set for each given month. The only problem is that we don't want those "weekly" tapes to show up in the expired tapes report since we have no intention of brining them back onsite and reusing them.
I've seen this thread about removing old tapes but I'm not sure of the downside to completely deleting tapes from the DB that I might one day wish to restore data from.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve
