DPM 2012 cannot reserve tape drive after failed drive cleaning job

$

Hi All

I've recently upgrade to DPM 2012 from 2007 and everything was going fine until a drive cleaning operation failed (I'm using a DELL TL2000). I have run the dell diagnostics and everything passes ok however every DPM long term protection job fails with the following error

'DPM could not reserve the drive resource because one of the required drive resources is not online or it needs cleaning or servicing. (ID 24052)'

Looking at the library it shows the Drive (in use: 0/Idle: 1)

Any help with this would most appreciated.

Tape backup jobs failing

I am currently in the process of migrating our backups to DPM 2012. I set up a protection group and moved 6 servers onto it the first night and all the jobs ran successfully. The second day I modified the protection group and added a further 20 servers to it. The backup jobs added are mostly just disk volumes and system state protection. Just after midnight, a lot of the jobs failed with this error:

Type:    Tape backup
Status:    Failed
Description:    The job was cancelled because the user modified the associated protection group. (ID 33342)
    More information
End time:    25/07/2012 12:05:01 a.m.
Start time:    25/07/2012 12:04:57 a.m.
Time elapsed:    00:00:03
Data transferred:    0 MB
Cluster node    -
Source details:    xxxxxxx\xxxx
Protection group:    xxxxxxxx
Library:    IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library
Tape Label (Barcode):    -

I certainly wasn't modifying the protection group at the time. The modification was done early in the afternoon and the protection group was scheduled to start backup at 11:00pm. Has anyone else seen this error before?

0x80070003 error during tape backup

Gents, I tried to backup to tape Windows 2008 R2 System State/Bare Metal Recovery items and see the following error:

Triggering tape backup failed:

Error 2033: DPM encountered an error while performing an operation for D:\WindowsImageBackup\ on dpm-server

Error details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003)

Recommended action: 1) Refer to the detailed error code in the description above. Retry this operation after the issue has been fixed.

2) If the error was due to insufficient resources, then it could be a transient failure and you should retry this operation after some time.

I open R2 server in DPM 2010 console, choose System State/Bare Metal Recovery items on Recovery Tab -> (right click) Create recovery point -> Long term tape protection.

Consistency check is OK. I did it again, no errors.

I see some topics with the same error in this forum, but I don't see solution.

I checked remote R2 server, D:\WindowsImageBackup\ doesn't exist. But MTA share exists.

I see this issue with on R2 servers. These R2 servers were installed some time ago (1 month). Backup features were added after DPM agent installation.

Two another R2 servers don't have this issue and tape backup works fine for System State/Bare Metal Recovery. These servers were installed approx 6 moths ago.

Can anyone explain, what is wrong and how to fix that ?

Thanks

DPM 2012 R2 Long-Term Backup to Tape Doesnt Run

I have several PGs and for some reason only 1 of them actually runs the monthly backup to tape. I have a few that are initially backed up to disk for short-term, long-term 1 month.

For some reason most of them do not run the monthly backup to tape job. I do not get any errors and I see the protection status as "OK".

Anyone else go through this issue or seen it before? Thanks!

Event ID 907 when attempt to recover from expired tape

In this scenario we have a DPM 2012 R2 UR6 running on Windows 2012 R2.

When we attempt to recover a data from expired tape;

1. Right click the expired tape and select 'Mark tape as free'

2. Right click and 'Unmark tape as free'

3. Right click and 'Recatalog imported tape'

After a while we are able to see the 'External DPM Tapes' and able to dig right down to where the file is.

4. Right click file and go through the wizard to recover to alternative location.

5. At the final stage, DPM GUI crashes and we see this screen:

In the event viewer, we are able to see Event ID 943:

The description for Event ID 943 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

Having looked around, I have found this link which applies to UR5 only - I have tried running it which then says KB3021791 is required (UR5).

To me this looks like a bug, anyone have any further recommendations?

Thanks.

Recovery from imported tape media fails and causes DPM management console to crash with ID: 917

Hi.

I have a newly installed DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 with a standalone dedicated SQL server which is causing me a bit of a headache right now.

I'm about to restore some files from an imported tape media, the tape is from our previous DPM server (DPM 2010). I have identified the media and cataloged it and i'm able to browse it to choose wich files to restore. But as soon as i try to finish up a restore job it causes the console to crash.

My server is running just fine with backups and restores from i.e tapes that is backed up by this server - no problem there - but imported is not working.

Below is the message from console when it crashes.

Connection to the DPM service has been lost.

Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled:
            DPM
            DPM Replication Agent
            SQLAgent$MSSQLSERVER
            MSSQL$MSSQLSERVER
            Virtual Disk Service
            Volume Shadow Copy

ID: 917

Any ideas?

Concern about pruning tape catalog

I need to prune the tape catalog because the DPMDB keeps growing.

If I prune the tape catalog to 1 month, will I get the same information in the Recovery pane in DPM? I like to know what dates I have tape backups for and what the barcode labels are.

Thanks.

Monthly and Yearly backups not working for Protection Group?

$

Hi

We have a Protection Group with 160 members currently attached to it. The group has the following customized Recovery Points:-

- 1 recovery point every 1 day for the last 2 weeks, 1 recovery point every 1 month for the last 60 months and 1 recovery point every year for the last 5 years.

The schedule is as follows:-

- Every Day at 01:00, Every Month on First Day at 01:00 and Every 12 Months on 01 January at 01:00.

The daily tape backups are working fine without issue but neither the Monthly or Yearly backups are being attempted. We have checked the monthly backups for this issue for the last few months and are unable to see any evidence of the Monthly schedule even running? This means that we are having to manually label the Daily tapes once a month as Monthly tapes but they will then stay on the Reports for the next 5 years as DPM will constantly request these tapes back.

Are you able to help with this matter?

Not that we really want to do this but if we removed the group completely and re-create it would this cause problems with our restore points?

Tape drive disappeared from autoloader

DPM Forum,

We have an HP 1x8 G2 autoloader with an internal LTO5 tape drive.  We are running Microsoft DPM 2010 (latest build) and have been experiencing tape backup failures for the past week.  When DPM starts to perform tape backups to the tape drive, the autoloader and tape drive will "drop off" the system (not present in Device Manager, either).  All jobs fail and the only way to get the autoloader and tape drive to appear back in Device Manager is to power-cycle the autoloader.

I have opened a case with HP Support and it has already been escalated as they detect no issues with the autoloader, tape drive or HBA (HP smart Array P212 SAS controller).  Of course, I think that the Library and Tape Tools tests pass because the equipment was power-cycled.

In any case, I've upgraded the HP tape device drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled them but cannot get the tape drive to appear in DPM 2010.  I've also tried the "remap" procedure at a command prompt and rescanned for devices in DPM but the tape drive fails to appear (only the autoloader appears along with the slots).

Can anyone assist or does this indicate an issue with the tape drive itself?

Thanks,

Joe

DPM - Reading Imported Tape - Fails / Crashes MMC

Recently reinstalled Windows Server 2012 R2 , SQL Server 2012 & SCDPM 2012 R2 with UR7.

After this I've installed got everything working as I wanted it and believed everything going smoothly, until now.

I can't seem to get around this problem at all. Whenever I click "View Contents" or "Recatalog" tape I get a crash of MMC, the problem closes and doesn't help me get data from the tape.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this error?

DPM2012 SP1 RU3 not recognizing cleaning tape

$

I have a Dell TL2000 tape library with two LTO5 drives and a LTO5 cleaning tape labelled as CLNUxxxx in slot 24. At the advice of Dell I have disabled auto-cleaning in the library and am trying to schedule cleaning on the DPM side.

DPM does not see the slot the cleaning tape is in after an inventory, regardless of whether this is slot 24 or whether we move it to another slot. The tape and slot simply don't appear in the Libraries view. I have assumed this is a sign that DPM is recognizing it as a cleaning tape, but when I run Start-DPMTapeDriveCleaning with the drive as a parameter, I get the following error:

"Start-DPMTapeDriveCleaning : Cleaning tapes are not available in IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library, to clean the selected drives. Please add cleaning tapes and restart the cleaning job. (ID: 31114)"

Any ideas what I can do (other than re-enable auto clean on the library and break some of my backup jobs?

I have upgraded my library and drive firmware and drivers to the versions recommended by Dell, but this has made no difference. I'm hesitant to upgrade DPM to a later rollup unless the changelog clearly addresses this issue, because the last rollup I applied destroyed my production system and caused weeks of disruption.

How can I set DPM 2010 Recovery Goals to mark a daily tape as "offsite ready" the following day?

DPM Forum,

How can I set my Recovery Goals in DPM 2010 so that a daily backup tape is marked as "offsite ready" the following day after the backup has completed?

I recently had to remove Long Term Protection from DPM 2010 to troubleshoot a disappearing tape drive issue.  I did not document what the Recovery Goals were.  Now, during daily backups, the 2nd tape (our nightly spills over into a 2nd tape) does not get marked "offsite ready" the next morning.  During last night's backup, data from last night was written to that 2nd tape that had data from the previous night.  Once that tape filled up, it did get marked as offsite ready.  How can I properly set the Recovery Goals?

Note: I have "co-location" enabled but I may not need it as there is only 1 Protection Group.

Thanks in advance,

Joe

write protection error

Hi,

I am attempting to run tape backups from DPM 2010 to a Dell Powervault 124T with an LTO4 drive.  Other backup software seems to write to the tapes fine, but DPM always gives the following error on multiple tapes:

The tape  (000110L4) (barcode - 000110L4) present in the Tape Library Dell (tm) PowerVault (tm) 124T Autoloader is write-protected. (ID 30003 Details: The media is write protected (0x80070013))

I have physically checked the tapes and the write protect switch is not set to protected.  DPM will erase the tapes with no errors.

Does anyone have any hints?

DPM 2012 does not see slots in IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library

I have installed DPM 2012 on a Windows 2012 R2 server and it has a SAS connected Dell TL2000 tape library.  I have installed the drivers for the drive and library but DPM only shows "Library: IBM TotalStorage 3573 Tape Library" and underneath it it shows Drives and there is an "IBM ULTRIUM 5 HH 3580 TAPE DRIVE".  There are no slots appearing even though there are 23 available.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but this does not work.  I have installed them from the command prompt (install_exclusive.exe) but still the slots are not appearing.  They appear to be working in the device manager and appear as above.  I have tried changing the Medium Changer to "unknown" but this makes it disappear in DPM altogether.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience of this issue and if so I would be most grateful of any advice.

Thanks

Chris

Configure DPM long-term backup on virtual tape library

 Hi all,

How can we configure a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) which is a software/appliance that can simulate the tape library with DPM 2012 R2 so that we have long-term backup?

After searching I found that Virtual tape libraries configured with a virtual fibre channel adapter are supported if you’re running Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 UR3 or later with certified hardware and FireStreamer software can be used to emulate this but I am looking for full documentation on this, can you help me please?

Any help here would be much appreciated.  The issue seems to have started when I started loading drivers into Device Manager to get the Quantum Superloader to be recognized as the Medium Changer, and the HP Ultrium as the tape drive.  They both show up once in Device Manager.   Even when removing these devices and doing a rescan in DPM 2010, the error still presents.  I am unable to get past this.  Any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: The tape library and tape drive both show up once in DPM 2010 as well.

Thanks.
